If you’re staying in Fort Worth for Super Bowl XLV, you’re sure to have a good time. As the “perfect mix of cowboys and culture,” Cowtown has a little something for everyone. But constantly hanging out in popular spots like Sundance Square can be, well, a little stifling. Get a little ways off the beaten path and try these restaurants that many locals love. Note that these are my opinions and I am not a food critic. Just a person who loves food. Really, really loves food.
Salsa Fuego - this place in west Fort Worth has won rave reviews from Fort Worth foodies as well as Texas Monthly magazine. Enjoy Tex-Mex favorites like pork carnitas tacos, enchiladas and burritos. Or try the Fuego Burger with green chiles and jalapeno mayo. See their entire menu here. Located at 3520 Alta Mere. They have discount dining certificates available for purchase; through Jan. 31, you can get $25 in food for $2 when you buy and use the promo code MEAL at checkout.
Ellerbe Fine Foods – this establishment in the up-and-coming Magnolia Ave. neighborhood focuses on seasonal ingredients – after all, what’s growing now is what tastes best. Lamb, shrimp, duck confit, pheasant and other meats are the stars of the dinner menu; bread pudding and caramel pots de creme are just a few items on their dessert list. Reservations are recommended; see their website to save a spot. 1501 W. Magnolia Ave.
Yucatan Taco Stand – not far from Ellerbe is this hip, casual spot. I’m partial to the chile relleno, but they also have chimichangas, chilaquiles, fajitas, seafood and more. They also have discount dining certificates available on Restaurant.com (check with the restaurant to make sure they take them on Super Bowl Weekend). 909 W. Magnolia Ave.
The Wild Mushroom - if you’re especially adventurous and you have a car at your disposal, head about 20 minutes west of Fort Worth to Weatherford and dine at this elegant establishment, which serves awesome cuisine with a Texas twist. Their steaks: to die for. I love their jalapeno and bacon mac n’ cheese, too. They also have great CFS (that’s Texas shorthand for “chicken fried steak”), but be warned – it’s huge! Check out their menu and site here. 1917 Martin Dr., Weatherford.
Artisan Baking Company - got a hankering for a cinnamon roll, muffin, cookie? Maybe a loaf of handmade bread? Go to this out-of-the-way bake shop in west Fort Worth. Their scrumptious treats are made fresh every day, using mostly local ingredients. Closed Sundays and Mondays and open till 3 p.m. every other day. Go early for the best selection. 4900 White Settlement Road. The selections change every day, so call ahead if you’ve got your heart set on a particular something. See their website here.
Ol’ South Pancake House – this spot near TCU is a student favorite. I haven’t had anything from their lunch menu, but the breakfasts are awesome. Plus, free wi-fi! Visit their website and fill in your email address for 10 percent off one person’s meal. 1509 S. University Drive.
Ruffino’s - I like going to this Italian spot for lunch, but their dinner is good, too. Last time we went, we had the crab cakes for an appetizer and they were great. Their pastas are good, too. If you plan to go from 5-7 p.m., print this coupon to get a free glass of wine with any $50 purchase during those hours. 2455 Forest Park Blvd.
Lightcatcher Winery & Bistro – this place in west Fort Worth serves indulgent bistro fare and, of course, wine. Check out their menu here. Dinner is only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 6925 Confederate Park Road.
