Free Family Festival at the Kimbell

 photo KimbellJapaneseFest2014_zpse7419447.jpgOn Saturday, April 12, the Kimbell Art Museum will host a free family festival, themed “Sights and Sounds of Japan.” The festival takes place from 1-4 p.m. A spectacular host of mighty samurai warriors will welcome families for a lively afternoon of creative art projects, artist demonstrations, family tours, children’s films made possible by the Lone Star Film Society, and interactive Kabuki theater workshops with Kent Williams.

No reservations are required to attend. Admission will also be free for the special exhibition Samurai: Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection during this event.

Main Street Arts Festival This Weekend

From Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, April 13 is Fort Worth’s Main Street Arts Festival, a showcase of art, food, live music and fun! Admission to the festival is free. Here are just a few of the things to look out for during this year’s festival:

Kids’ Activities – two entire city blocks are dedicated to MAIN ST. Creates!, featuring a rock climbing wall, balloon designing, ceramic tile painting, sand art and more. Some of these activities come with a cost; check out the kids’ activity web page for more info.

Food and Drink – you can get pretty much any kind of cuisine you can think of at this year’s festival. See a list of food vendors here.

Bring Your Own Water Bottle – forget disposables. The Tarrant Regional Water District is sponsoring water refill stations throughout the festival, so you can fill up for free. Bring one from home, or buy a commemorative aluminum bottle for 9 coupons.

Ride a Bike to the Festival – there are 14 bike-sharing stations by Fort Worth Bcycle located within walking distance of the festival. You can use the promo code 76102 at any station to get half-price access to the system ($4) on the day of the festival.

Buy Coupons – all food and beverage purchases, plus other activities, are done through coupons instead of cash. Buy yours online ahead of time and avoid the wait in line.

First Saturday Event + Farmers Market at BRIT

On Saturday, April 5, the Botanical Research Institute of Texas will host its monthly First Saturday event, a family-friendly event that opens up the facility to the public for exhibitions, tours and more. The theme for this month is “Inspired by Nature” – BRIT experts will talk about biomimicry, the practice of using nature’s designs to solve human problems. There will also be a storytime for kids from 10:30 to 11:30. In addition, visitors can explore BRIT’s pocket prairie, geology wall, braided gardens, and wetland area. This month is also the year’s first Farmer’s Market – from 8 a.m. to noon, shop the market for a variety of fresh, seasonal produce from farms and community gardens located in and around Fort Worth. Baked goods, pickles, honey, olive oil and other artisanal goods will also be on sale. See a list of vendors here. Be sure to stop by Flatlanders Taco Truck for a bite to eat.

Kimbell Kids Event This Saturday

Each session features a brief gallery activity and a related studio art project. This session’s theme is “Helmets for Heroes.”

No pre-registration is available for this event. However, space is limited to the first 20 children. Sign up at the entrance to the education studios in the Renzo Piano Pavilion, beginning one hour before the program.

Spring Break Activities at the Bureau of Engraving

 photo bureauengraving.pngSchool’s out next week! Keep the kids occupied and educate them at the same time with special Spring Break activities at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Fort Worth. From March 11-14 (Tuesday-Friday), visit the facility for special Employee Craftsmanship Demonstrations, which give kids an inside look at how money is made. You can:

  • Witness Intaglio engraving artisanship at the engraver’s workbench.
  • Learn about plate making for Offset printing presses.
  • Enjoy the educational activities in the Kid$ Corral where children over 8 years old can engrave and print their very own currency design, and makes a fantastic free souvenir.
  • See how currency was printed circa 1900 at the refurbished spider press.
  • Learn how Intaglio printing plates are “grown” in a nickel solution.

This is a free event! The facility is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but the Kid$ Corral and Create Your Own Currency activities happen from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Opening Celebration at Chisholm Trail Center

 photo chisholmtrailcc_zpsbd6b07ec.jpegOn Saturday, March 1, the city of Fort Worth will commemorate the opening of the new Chisholm Trail Community Center with a special celebration. The public is invited to come check out the new facility, a multipurpose fitness and activity center that features group exercise classes, an interactive and structured after-school program, state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment and more.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that includes speakers such as Mayor Betsy Price, District 6 Councilmember Jungus Jordan and Crowley ISD Superintendent Dan Powell. Chisholm Trail Community Center houses an intricate and abstract sculpture created for the center by local artist Etty Horowitz, commissioned through the Fort Worth Public Art Program. Following the ribbon cutting, Chisholm Trail Community Center will open to feature a meet-and-greet with the artist, fitness demonstrations, entertainment, healthy refreshments and door prizes.
