Frontier Forts Days at the Stockyards

This Friday and Saturday (May 13-14) is the annual Frontier Forts Days celebration at the Fort Worth Stockyards. Come out to the Stockyards each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and participate in a variety of fun activities. This is a free event!

During this two-day heritage event, the Stockyards National Historic District is transformed into an authentic representation of Texas frontier life. Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards will be lined with encampments of historic fort sites from the Texas Forts Trail and elsewhere in Texas. Approximately 10 forts and related programs will participate in the event. Designed to highlight frontier-era life, Frontier Forts Days brings together authentic wagons, flags, music, colorful uniforms and military gear from Texas landmarks.

Planned events include military parades, artillery and cavalry demonstrations, music, chuckwagon demonstrations and more. See the schedule of events here.

“Spring Into Nash” at Nash Farm

Saturday, April 16 is Spring Into Nash, a free annual event held at Nash Farm in Grapevine. Events take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include heritage toys, kitchen gardening, cotton planting, farm animals, wagon rides, wood carving demonstrations, jump rope making, wood stove cooking and blacksmith demonstrations. Registration is not required and all ages are encouraged to attend. Coupons can be purchased for activities that require a fee. Concessions are also available.

Admission to the main garden is, of course, always free, but admission to the wonderful Japanese Garden always costs a little cash. Open Streets + Earth Party on FW’s Southside

On Sunday, April 3, come to Fort Worth’s Southside for Open Streets, a car-free street fair filled with activities for everyone. The fair will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Magnolia Avenue between Eighth Avenue and Hemphill Street. Some parts of the route will be full of activities and vendors, while some will be more relaxed, allowing the gentle enjoyment of a neighborhood not dominated by cars. There is no charge to attend!

Enjoy food vendors, live music, water stations, a children’s area, fitness classes and more. Dogs are welcome. Choose to spend your time in the Roll Zone — an entire lane dedicated to rolling fun on bikes, boards, skates and scooters — or the Stroll Zone — more than 100 community partners providing free, family-friendly activities. Parking is available at 1201 Alston Ave.

While you’re enjoying Open Streets, make sure to head over to Magnolia Green Park for the Fort Worth Earth Party, a family event that celebrates everything green and sustainable in Fort Worth. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. The Earth Party includes educational booths, children’s activities, a tree giveaway and prizes, including four Fort Worth staycation packages. This is also a free event.

Spring Break Activity: Bison-Feeding Hayride

From Tuesday, March 15 through Thursday, March 17, the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge will offer bison-feeding hayrides twice daily for curious kids and parents! Enjoy an old-fashioned hayride to the bison range where you will get to see the bison up close and personal as you assist staff in feeding them range cubes. You will also visit the hay barn, where you can learn about bison management practices. During the entire hayride, guides will discuss the habitats represented at the Nature Center as well.

The tour begins at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center. Cost is $15 per child age 3 and up, with paid admission to the Nature Center ($5 adults, $2 kids). Members are $10. Find details here. Hayrides start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day.
