Gardening Discounts at SmartScape Event

This Saturday, April 11, the Texas SmartScape program will host a native plant sale at Home Depot at 7100 North Freeway in Fort Worth. During the sale, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon, you can get great discounts on “water smart” plants suited for the hot, dry Texas climate. You’ll also have the opportunity to talk with a master gardener, plant expert, or irrigation specialist and get ideas and tips for landscaping in North Texas. Kids can come, too, and participate in a special hands-on gardening workshop.

Free Salon Services for Prom

This one is a ways away, but it might be worth the drive! In a couple of weeks, Remington College in Dallas will provide free salon services to students heading to prom. Simply come on one of their select nights in April or May and get updos, manicures, pedicures, and makeup applications; guys can get a haircut. Services will be performed by students in the school’s cosmetology program. The dates are as follows:

Friday & Saturday, April 17 & 18
Friday & Saturday, April 24 & 25
Friday & Saturday, May 15 & 16

Salon hours are 9:30 am – 1:00 pm on Fridays; 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, call 972-698-3890.

Spring Gallery Night in Fort Worth

This Saturday, March 28, the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association will host Spring Gallery Night, a semi-annual tradition that celebrates the city’s various art galleries. From about noon to 9 p.m., you can stroll through many participating galleries (most are free - the only exception is The Modern) and enjoy other activities, too. See a complete schedule of events here. There are many participating venues, but a few highlights include:

Art Galleries at TCU – hosted reception from 6-8 p.m. (this usually means free food and/or wine)

SiNaCa Studios – live glassblowing demonstrations throughout the day

Art in the City (Haltom City) – performance by The Jazz Monsters from 3-5 p.m. Free refreshments, too.

Brand 10 – attend a “closing party” from 5-9 p.m. to commemorate the shuttering of the gallery

iMake Festival at Science Museum

This weekend, March 28-29, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History will host iMake Maker Fest, a celebration of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. Regular Museum admission gets you entry into all the great activities. Here are some of the experiences planned:

Local Makers: Check out the inventive, creative and resourceful Makers in the Inventor Studio.

Spin Art: Create artistic patterns with simple circuits.

Cardboard Constructions: Design and craft your very own cardboard creation.

Just for Educators: Stop by our Teacher’s Lounge on Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm.

3D Printers: Hot-glue guns on steroids.

Electronics Dissection: You never know what you will find inside broken electronics.

Kinetic Light Sculptures: Explore light, shadow, and motion using simple materials and light sources.

Chain Reactions: Construct a Rube Goldberg inspired contraption from everyday materials and found objects with other museum guests.

Operation Catapult: Build a catapult at home or at the museum and join us in the Atrium Saturday at 1:30 for a group launch.

Stellar Creations: Come make your own constellations with Noble Planetarium staff

Museum admission is $15 for adults, $11 for kids 2-12 and $13 for seniors 65 and up. Kids under 2 are free.

Ren Faire Preview Day at Ridgmar Mall

On Thursday, March 26, Ridgmar Mall will host a Scarborough Renaissance Festival Preview from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Get a sneak peek at the fun ren faire, which kicks off in early April in Waxahachie. It promises to be an evening full of fun with Knighting Ceremonies, Court/Country Dances, Impromptu Musical Performances, and Scarborough Performer Meet ‘n Greet/Photo Ops.  There will also be ticket giveaways for the Scarborough Renaissance Festival 2015. This is a free event!

Fireworks Show at Camp Carter

On Saturday, March 21, YMCA Camp Carter in Fort Worth will host a night of fireworks beginning at 8 p.m. The fireworks will be engineered by local students in a firework technician training course. The gates will open at approximately 6 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10 per car, and it goes towards Camp Carter’s Annual Campaign to provide camp scholarships to families in need. Concession vendors, including Kona Ice, will be on hand.
