Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops

 photo bassprosanta_zps5ccebb8f.pngA few days ago, Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine kicked off their Santa’s Wonderland event, which will run through Dec. 24. During specified times, you can visit the store and the kids can participate in lots of Christmas-themed activities, absolutely free. The fun happens on weekdays from 3-8 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Here’s what to expect:

Free Santa Photos – get a free 4×6 photo with Santa Claus. Other photo packages are available for purchase.

Free Christmas Crafts – different crafting events will be held at various hours, depending on the day. See the schedule here.

Free Backpack Clips – come by on Mondays from 5-7 p.m.; the first kids can get a free woodland character backpack clip.

Kimbell Kids Drop-In Studio – Aug. 30 from 1 to 1:45 p.m., Kimbell Art Museum. Free program introduces children (ages 12 and younger) and their adult companions to fun and inspiring ways to enjoy art together. Each session features a brief gallery activity and a related studio art project. The theme for this week is “Monster Portraits.” Pre-registration is not required. Sign up 1 hour before the program begins at the museum’s Renzo Piano Pavilion.

Bedford Blues & BBQ Festival – Aug. 29-31, Bedford City Hall grounds. Sample great barbecue and hear live music. Admission is $7 online, $10 at gate, weekend pass for $15. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Clear Fork Music Festival - Aug. 30, Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth. Full-day music and art experience. Food truck vendors on site. General admission $30 per person, $60 for VIP and $75 for super-VIP.

Animal Meet & Greet – Monday, Sept. 1, Fort Worth Nature Center. Join the staff for an animal meet and greet and learn about why we have our animal ambassadors and their natural history. Maximum 50 participants per session. First Come, First Served. At 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Free with paid admission ($5 adults, $2 kids)

LEGO KidsFest – Aug. 29-31, Dallas Convention Center. Details here.

Scare Tactics: 6 by Hitchcock – Aug. 29-31, The Modern. The Lone Star Film Society’s ArthouseFW and the Modern finish out the summer with an exciting series showcasing six pivotal Alfred Hitchcock films. See a schedule here. Tickets  are $5-8.

WestFest - Aug. 29-31, West, TX. Czech-themed festival with musical performances, parade, polka dancing, kolaches and more. $8 adults, $6 kids.

Music at West 7th – Aug. 29 and 30, Crockett Square in Fort Worth’s West 7th district. Performances start at 6:30 p.m. each night. Deanna Valone plays Friday, The Brehms play on Saturday.

Kids Fish – at Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine. Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. kids can fish inside this outdoor superstore. They provide the poles, bait and fish.

Farmhouse on the Grapevine Prairie – Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at Nash Farm. This program, appropriate for kids in grades 3-7, explores what life was like during the time of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie. Theme for this week’s event is “Summer Harvest.” Activity fee of $3 per person.

Summer Kickoff Event at Bass Pro Shops

On Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, Bass Pro Shops will hold a Summer Kickoff Event at its Grapevine store. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., families can get a free camping-themed photo download, and from noon to 4 p.m., there will be free crafts for the kids (sand art sun on Saturday, wooden insect on Sunday). Plus, kids can complete a Summer Kickoff Challenge – the first 100 kids to complete all 3 activities in the challenge will receive a free bug glider!

Bonus: Snap a photo of your kids completing the challenge and post it to the Bass Pro Shops Grapevine Facebook page – one winner will be chosen to receive a $25 Bass Pro gift card.

As the weekend gets closer, here are a few free retail store events to keep in mind, for you and your family:

Michaels - stop by your local Michaels craft store on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 1-3 p.m. for a free Wilton demo. Learn how to make fun Halloween treats.

Bass Pro Shops - Come by the Bass Pro store in Grapevine on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a free family event sponsored by the Professional Bull Riders. Kids can do stick bull riding, face painting, coloring and even make a free leather keychain. From 1-2 p.m., you can meet a real professional bull rider.

Williams-Sonoma – On Sunday, Oct. 17, Williams-Sonoma stores will hold “From Tough to Tender,” a free cooking technique class that will teach you how to transform tough cuts of meat like brisket into tender dishes. Reservations for this class are requested; call the University Park Village store in FW at 817-334-0009 to RSVP.

Home Depot - The Home Depot has three free DIY workshops (for grownups) this Saturday, Oct. 16: One on decorative painting solutions, one on decorative flooring, and another on how to save energy in your home. Find out more and RSVP here.

American Girl Store – stop by the American Girl Store in Dallas (13464 Dallas Pkwy, at the Dallas Galleria) on Friday, Oct. 15 at noon for a free Bitty Twins Animal Safari event. Girls ages 3 and up can punch out and color paper animals to take home. Or come by the store on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. for Lanie’s Nature Activity Day. At this free event, girls 8 and up can sprout their very own “mini gardens” in a seed-starting cup, make a seed label for the garden, and complete a garden scavenger hunt. (There is a fee-based Lanie’s Celebration taking place after this event, at 3:30 p.m.; if you would like to do this one, call 877-247-5223 for reservations.)
