Free Kids’ Events This Weekend: Lowes, Disney Store, Walmart

Here’s the best of the best for kids this weekend, Aug. 14-15:

Come to your local Lowes home improvement store around 10 a.m. on Aug. 14 (Saturday) and have your kids build a wooden bug box for free. The workshop is an hour long and building supplies are limited, so show up early. To RSVP for the workshop and ensure your spot, go here. Upon completion of the workshop, your little builders will also receive a coupon good for a free Jr. Frosty at Wendy’s.

Go to your local Disney Store at either 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. on Aug. 14 to make a “Perry the Platypus Inaction Figure” from the show Phineas & Ferb. Minimum age 3 years. Call ahead to make sure your store is participating.

Celebrate Dora the Explorer’s 10th birthday at Walmart from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free cupcakes, party favors and special prices on Dora items. Find participating stores here. Bring your favorite photo, because you’ll have the chance to create a special 5×7 Dora photo card.

Scouting Museum Exhibit: The Arlington Historical Society recently opened its newest exhibit, focused on Scouting and scouting history. Museum is open from 2-4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and tickets are $3 (free for kids 12 and under). At the Historic Fielder House, 1616 W. Abram St. in Arlington.
OPUS: See the Circle Theatre’s performance of OPUS, a drama about a string quartet. There is adult language and content, so don’t bring the kids. Tickets are normally $20-30, but preview performances are available on Friday, Feb. 12 for $15 ($10 students), and at 3 p.m. on Feb. 13 for $10 (everyone). Great Backyard Bird Count: Come to the River Legacy Living Science Center (703 NW Green Oaks Blvd.) in Arlington to help the staff count birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count, a program held in conjunction with Cornell University.
