Earth Day Celebration at River Legacy Science Center

On Saturday, April 9, River Legacy Living Science Center in Arlington will host its annual Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free event is fun for the whole family and features nature hikes, story time with the Arlington Public Library, games, crafts and other activities. Family activities include creating art from recycled materials, making wildflower seed balls, investigating the plants and animals of the forest floor, face painting and more.

Attendees will get to make their own “Tree Nametags” with the Cross Timbers Master Naturalists and learn how to go native in their yards with the Native Plant Society of Texas. US Fish & Wildlife will present Endangered Species Artifacts, and the Trinity River Authority will feature a Water Wheel trivia activity. Other guests providing activities and information include General Motors with a “Green Car” Display and the Texas Metro Wildlife Rehabilitators.

Cardboard Boat Regatta at Six Flags

On Saturday, April 26, River Legacy in Arlington will sponsor its annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cardboard Boat Regatta challenges amateur boat builders to design, build and navigate boats made entirely of corrugated cardboard. You can build your boat beforehand, or participate in the Build-On-Site competition on the event day. See all the details here. Registration to participate in the Regatta ranges from $50 to $90, and there are discounts for schools and churches. For $5, kids can participate in the Mini-Boat Regatta.

If you’re not into building, you can still come and enjoy the fun. General admission to the Regatta is $8 per person, or $6 if you stop by River Legacy before April 25 and pick up your tickets. Kids will enjoy the children’s area, which includes Hook’s Lagoon, face painting, bubble play and a hula-hooping contest.

Six Flags will also open some of their water attractions at the Regatta. For $10, you can purchase a ride pass that includes admission to the Tornado ride, Tsunami Surge & Typhoon Twister (all subject to availability on event day). Sky Coaster Swing Rides cost $10 per person (2-person minimum ride).

Animal Exploration Event at River Legacy

Discover the habits and adaptations of one of our native animals during a live animal observation with a River Legacy Naturalist at River Legacy Living Science Center. Also, on Monday, Feb. 3, River Legacy will host an open house for its Nature School, a program that teaches preschool-age kids about nature and science. Kids can participate in a variety of activities while parents meet the teachers and learn more about the program.

Fall Fun at “After Dark in the Park”

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 5-7), River Legacy Park in Arlington will sponsor After Dark in the Park, a fun, family-oriented festival featuring storytelling, karaoke, pumpkin patch, animal encounters, bounce houses and a variety of children’s games, crafts and activities. The festival runs from 5-9 p.m. each night. Admission is $7 per person; kids 2 and under are free. All proceeds benefit the environmental education programs of River Legacy Living Science Center.

River Legacy will also sponsor a pumpkin-carving/pumpkin-decorating contest during the three days of the event. To enter, see the details on this page; you simply take a photo of yourself with your carved or decorated pumpkin and e-mail it in. The pumpkins with the most votes in each category win.

Raptors of Texas Show at River Legacy Center

Come out to the River Legacy Living Science Center on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. for their Raptors of Texas show. Education specialists from the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center will introduce you to hawks, owls, and falcons of different sizes. You will also learn about the unique characteristics of each bird and how these characteristics aid them in survival. This is a free event! Admission to River Legacy is free, but donations are accepted.

Fun Event: After Dark in the Park

Oct. 8-10 is the weekend for After Dark in the Park, a fall festival at River Legacy Park in Arlington. It highlights the educational programs of River Legacy Living Science Center, but there’s plenty of fun stuff to do. Scheduled events include karaoke, storytelling under the stars, a pumpkin patch, and even hayride shuttles from the parking lot to the event entrance.

The event takes place from 5-9 p.m. each night. Admission is $7 per person, with children 2 and under free. Families can also purchase a Family Fun Pack through Oct. 6 at the Living Science Center-  it includes 4 admission tickets and 40 concession/activity coupons for $40.

The site says that “in case of event cancellation, consider all advance-ticket purchases a donation to the River Legacy Living Science Center.” If you’re not OK with that, then buy at the gate.
